SSC 1919 - LONG SHADOWS:LEGACY NAZI&SOVIET OCCEAST EUROPE credits: 6.0 The Nazis and the soviets were dominant forces in the twentieth century. As occupying powers, they attempted to transform nations and redefine cultures in Eastern and Central Europe. This was especially true in Poland and Czechoslovakia (now known as the Czech Republic). Therefore, focusing primarily on the historical events that took place in these two nations during the last century, we will explore the rise and fall of the Nazis and soviets, paying particular attention to the impact they had in Eastern Europe. The first part of this course will involve instruction at Elmira College; however, the lessons of history we learn on campus will be reinforced as we travel through Poland and Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, during the second part of this course. Objectives: A) Describe the state affairs in Eastern and Central Europe prior to WWI, including the geography of this region; B) Describe the key ways Eastern and Central Europe changed as a result of WWI, especially with regard to geography and power; C) Discuss the importance of the Versailles Conference for Eastern Europe; D) Identify key individuals and events, including where and when they occurred they occurred with regard to: a) the rise of the Nazis and the Soviet Union; b) WWII in Poland; c) the Cold War and soviet occupation; d) Prague Spring and its aftermath; e) Solidarity Movement (Solidarnosc); f) the fall of the iron curtain and its impact on Poland and Czechoslovakia; E) Discuss the modern cultures of Poland and the Czech Republic and the way these societies have been reborn since the soviet occupation and the fall of communism. Method of Instruction: In-class lecture-dialogue; Assigned readings; Power Point and oral presentations by instructors and students; Film presentations; Travel; Use of critical thinking questions during the travel component. Method of Evaluation: On Campus Presentation: 20%; Test: 15%; Journal Entries: 40%; Citizenship: 25%. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement. TRAVEL COURSE, FEES ASSOCIATED.
