SOC 2915 - GANGS IN AMERICA

CRJ 2915 -SOC 2915. Will analyze modern urban American gangs. Will be able to examine in depth an area of historical inquiry and renewed research. The existence and resurgence of gangs tells us much about social structure, the economy and the power of groups. In addition, gangs have been represented in American films and are associated with urban violence, racial conflict, and social decay. Comparing these images with current research will be clarifying. Objectives: A) Become acquainted with theories of gang formation and function; B) Become familiar with recent case-studies and comparative research on gangs; C) Examine the structure and group dynamics of gangs; D) Analyze and critique the representation of gangs in film, E) Consider gangs’ relationship to deviance and crime. Method of Instruction: Students are expected to: attend class, participate actively and productively in discussion and remain current in their reading, completing the material by the day listed next to it. Method of Evaluation: Four exams (20% each), and participation which includes attendance, quizzes, class discussion and written responses to videos (20%).
