PSY 2935 - PSYCHOLOGY OF MEMORY: FNCTN, DYSFNCDEVELOPMENT

credits: 6.0
This course provides an in-depth examination of the mechanisms supporting human memory, including its function, dysfunction, and development throughout the lifespan. An emphasis of this course will be on the reading, discussion, and interpretation of case studies both of superior memory abilities and of extreme cases of memory loss. These accounts will be compared to the “state of the science” regarding memory, including such topics as implicit versus explicit memory, emotions and flashbulb memories, short-term versus long-term memory, working memory, mnemonic techniques, false memories, and cognitive resilience versus decline throughout adulthood. Through the examination of famous scientific reports (e.g., H.M.), popular accounts (e.g., Oliver Sacks), and fictional interpretations (e.g., Memento) of unique cases of disordered and superior memory, students will have the opportunity to explore the notion of memory as a non-unitary concept, but as a critical element to one’s self-identity. Objectives: A) Explain effective techniques for improving and enhancing memory; B) Evaluate case studies of memory across both scientific and experiential criteria; C) Articulate accuracies and inaccuracies in popular portrayals of memory disorders and superior memory; D) Compare and contrast different types of amnesia, including normal versus abnormal forgetting throughout the lifespan. Method of Instruction: Class will include some lecture on each major topic, but the primary focus will be on in-class discussion of the readings. Students will also be expected to do occasional presentations and the readings will be supplemented with in-class viewings of relevant full-length films and shorter film clips. The course will also be supplemented by guest speakers (e.g., practicing neurologist) and field trips (e.g., nursing home). Method of Evaluation: Participation will be assessed based on contribution to class discussions. The course will also incorporate a midterm and a final based on material covered in the course text and lectures. As for assignments, students will be required to do an original data collection project in which they design and administer a novel memory test to a case participant and share their findings during a class presentation. Students will also be required to write weekly reflection papers addressing specific questions related to the assigned readings, films, guest speakers, and field trips.
