PSC 4597 - SENIOR PROJECT IN POLITICAL SCIENCE credits: 1.0 This course is designed as a capstone experience allowing students the opportunity to synthesize work they have done in one or more courses, using the skills obtained in Research Methods. Students will build upon a major project from an earlier course and expand it to demonstrate mastery of the topic and the specific research question. Objectives: A) Demonstrate mastery of a specific topic and research question in political science; B) Describe a problem or theoretical question in political science or politics; C) Apply appropriate definitions of terms both as a matter of scholarly and colloquial use; D) Analyze an important question or policy utilizing appropriate statistical or qualitative methods; E) Apply that analysis to contemporary American or World politics; F) Explain the relationship between their problem and underlying political theories; and G) Explain the importance of their findings to the real world. Method of Instruction: Independent work by students, guided by one-on-one meetings with the instructor. The primary means of instruction will be through the application of the scientific method to a problem or question chosen by the student in consultation with the faculty member to produce a research paper sufficient to answer the research question and appropriately test hypotheses (e.g., a minimum of approximately 20 pages). Method of Evaluation: Grading will be based on the faculty evaluation of the research paper.
Prerequisite(s): SENIOR STATUS.
