PSC 3041 - CONSTITUTIONAL LAW I: FOUNDATIONS credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: CRJ 3041 CRJ 3041 -PSC 3041. An introduction to the legal system as a whole, the functions of courts, lawyers, and other actors in the legal system. Most importantly the course focuses on the judicial branch, particularly the Supreme Court, and its place in the Constitutional order. How has the Court helped to structure the powers of the federal government and its own relationship with the other branches? Also, how has the Court interpreted the Constitution’s grant of authority to the government generally, and each of the branches specifically? Objectives: A) Describe the nature of law and its functions as a social instrument; B) Utilize the resources and limitations of the law effectively; C) Describe the structure and functions of the judicial system; D) Articulate and analyze the relations among law, legal institutions and the political system; E) Discuss how the Court interprets the Constitution and how that interpretation impacts the rest of government; F) Critically analyze the interrelationship between law and society. Method of Instruction: Lecture, Case method, and Socratic Method. Method of Evaluation: One exam (mid-term), Socratic interaction, and a term paper. Meets *WRT and *WEP Distribution Requirements.
