PSC 2902 - POLITICS AND FILM credits: 6.0 The motion picture is a relatively new medium of social communication and - while we are all familiar with films as a way to convey dramatic stories - less attention is given to their political content. Increasingly, movies are challenging traditional print and television news sources as our primary source of political information. Often we view these movies passively without critical analysis. This course encourages critical assessment of the images on the screen. Topics may include: portrayal of war, race relations, gender relations, campaigns, elections, politicians, the “political documentary,” and utopian/dystopian political visions of the future. Students will be required to write a research paper and lead a discussion on one film-topic. Objectives: A) Raise awareness about the political content in motion pictures; B) Assess the strengths and weaknesses of film as a vehicle for political communication; C) Develop analytical skills through viewing films, reading, discussion, writing, and research project. Method of Instruction: Viewing films (in part or whole), discussion, reading, and in-class student presentation. Method of Evaluation: Class Participation (20%), Response Papers (each film) (20%), Midterm Exam (20%), and Research Paper-Presentation (40%). Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
