PSC 1200 - THE JUDICIAL PROCESS

CRJ 1200 -PSC 1200, will provide a general overview of the United States judicial system, including recent innovations and future trends. The particular emphasis of this course is the process of criminal adjudication from arrest through final appeal and collateral proceedings; however, comparisons will be made to the process of civil adjudication where appropriate. Topics addressed include: the organization of federal and state courts, the common law tradition, the courtroom work group, the trial-level adjudication process, sentencing, appeals, and the juvenile court system. Objectives: A) Identify and assess the role of common law as the foundation of the United States criminal justice system; B) Describe the organization, structure, and adjudicatory process of the American courts, including the courtroom workgroup; C) Critically analyze the basic rights of criminal defendants at trial, including the unique procedures for adjudicating juveniles in the United States; D) Identify and critique various sentencing philosophies, factors, and policies designed to achieve “fairness” in sentencing; E) Describe the process and procedures used in appellate and collateral review of criminal cases. Method of Instruction: Will be taught combining traditional lectures with a semi-Case Study Method-Socratic Method format. Method of Evaluation: Class participation, Midterm examination, Final examination, and Reflection paper.
