PSC 1000 - STUDENT CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE:LAWS, REGULATIONS, AND PROCEDURES credits: 1.0 Crosslisted/Same As: CRJ 1000 CRJ 1000 -PSC 1000, to examine and explore the rights of students at college, with an emphasis on private institutions such as Elmira College. Much of our in-class activities will center on discussion, debate, and problem-solving, on topics such as freedom of speech, equal protection (Title IX), school safety, and student discipline. Further, students will identify, analyze, compare, and critique the policies of Elmira College with those of other private and public institutions. Using a targeted, non-indoctrinational approach, student will gain a broad appreciation for the role and limitations placed upon institutions of higher education in crafting student conduct policies and conducting disciplinary hearings. Objectives: A) Identify the facts relevant to resolution of an education law issue and in support of an argument for a particular outcome to a problem presented; B) Discuss issues relevant to education law raised by a given set of facts/scenario; C) Hear ideas and opinions of others and empathize with their feelings, concerns and personal rights; D) Apply the relevant Constitutional provision(s), statute(s), case law, administrative rule(s), or institutional policies to the relevant facts to solve or analyze a problem; E) Make decisions objectively after thinking through most aspects of the issue; F) Analyze and evaluate all aspects of a conflict situation and determine possible alternative solutions. Method of Instruction: Lectures, Discussions, Presentations, and Guest Lectures. Method of Evaluation: Papers, Quizzes, Projects, Presentations, and Examinations.
