PHR 2131 - ”JUST SITTING”:AN INTRO TO BUDDHISM THRGH FILM&TXT credits: 3.0 This course uses illustrated print materials, audio and visual media, and personal reflection to introduce students to Buddhist thought and practice. Students will see and hear about the foundation, development and current status of Buddhism as a cultural and religious phenomenon. Students will also be introduced to the idea of “just sitting”, a non-religious introduction to relaxation and meditation utilizing traditions from several different sources. Objectives: Students will be able to understand and appreciate Buddhist history, thought and practice more fully. Method of Instruction: Introductory lecture on Buddhist topics prior to viewing film. Discussion follows viewing. Method of Evaluation: Students may choose one of the following writing assignment categories: 1) A series of four expository reviews of journalistic articles about each movie viewed in the class. Each essay must be a minimum of three, double spaced pages in which central doctrinal issues are explained to a general audience, both appropriate and accurate to the Buddhist tradition depicted. 2) Two six page essays that compare and contrast one Buddhist tradition to another, focusing on two doctrinal or devotional/ritual distinctives between the compared tradition, e.g., the use of art , monastic practices, lay devotional activities, renunciation rebirth, etc.. 3) One twelve-page academic research paper on a Buddhist topic discussed with and approved by the instructor. Note: Choices 2 and 3 require the use of a standard citation system and bibliographic references. Choice 1 must also cite sources for direct quotations, paraphrasing and technical terms, but only with respect to textbook or other scholarly sources; in other words, film dialogue need not be included in your citations.
