PHR 1910 - THINKING ABOUT MOVIES: AN INTRO TOPHILOSOPHY

This course investigates key philosophical themes and concepts such as personal identity, ethics, the problem of knowledge, and metaphysical questions, and political questions through the work of contemporary filmmakers that may include, for example, Stanley Kubrick, Woody Allen, Ingmar Bergman, and others. Objectives: A) How to discuss and critically analyze films; B) Key concepts of the Western philosophical tradition; C) How to interpret and evaluate philosophical texts through written assignments. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, and mall-group activities. Method of Evaluation: Written assignments (one short five pp. paper and a longer eight-ten pp. paper due at end of term). Class participation (this includes active participation in small-group discussions, a presentation of their longer paper, general class participation and shorter in-class writing activities). Meets *WEP Distribution Requirements.
