PED 1930 - MINDFULNESS YOGA AND MEDITATION

Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation is a total 6-credit course designed to develop the practice of meditation and yoga postures, to study their religious/philosophical contexts and to investigate the scientific discoveries of the benefits of each. The course includes local field trips to sanctuaries of yoga and mediation as well as class on campus. This is an experiential course that also includes discussion, extensive journal writing and a research project. Objectives: A) Correctly perform a series of yoga postures; B) Identify 25 poses in Sanskrit; C) Describe benefits of certain yoga postures; D) Explain the basic philosophy of yoga; E) Present research on a scientific discovery of the benefits of yoga or meditation; F) Express in writing the experience of yoga and mediation. Method of Instruction: Demonstrations, class discussions of assigned readings, practice of postures, breathing techniques and meditation, and Field trips to local sanctuaries. Method of Evaluation: 20% Participation (attend class, do the postures, breathing exercises and mediation, contribute to class discussions, engage in all field trip activities); 20% Quizzes; 20% Journal; 20% Practicum on yoga postures; and 20% Final Project. Only PHR 1930  meets *NWP Distribution Requirement. COURSE FEE: $120.00 FOR FIELD TRIPS.
