NSG 2100C - FOUNDATIONS I: CLINICAL PROFESSIONLNURSING PRACTICE credits: 0.0 Grade of C, minimum of 73, or better in theory portion and a P in the clinical portion must be achieved in order to progress to the next required nursing course. Grade less than a C will require the student to repeat the course if the student remains a nursing major. A failure in the clinical component will result in an F for the course. This theory-laboratory-clinical course focuses on the foundations of caring professional nursing practice. Beginning nursing students will explore communication, diversity, basic health assessment, and spirituality as it contributes to the promotion and maintenance of health. Self-knowledge, self-control, self-caring and self-healing are examined in the professional and inter-professional context. Objectives: A) Utilize effective communication strategies in the promotion and maintenance of health in the classroom and long term care setting; B) Describe how an individual’s culture, economic, spiritual, and-or sociocultural disparities-barriers might impact health and quality of life; C) Identify the protection of respect, dignity, and privacy in the health care while maintaining confidentiality; D) Design culturally appropriate inter-professional practices and services for diverse consumers to improve access, promote positive outcomes, and reduce disparities; E) Incorporate therapeutic communication effectively to interact with clients, families and members of the health care team within the long term care environment; F) Demonstrate proficiency in performing basic health assessment skills and fundamental competencies within the scope of nursing practice across the continuum of care. Method of Instruction: Teaching-learning strategies will be drawn from but are not limited to: interactive classroom learning, discussion, demonstration, self-directed learning modules, written assignments, group discussion, case studies, group learning activities, quizzes, exams, and technological assisted learning with course base management system (Canvas), campus laboratory practice, and supervised clinical practice. Method of Evaluation: Clinical: Clinical-Lab P-F; Concept Map P-F; Learning Competency P-F. Theory: Written graded Assignments 40%, Quizzes (four) combined 10%, Exam I 15%, Exam II 15%, Final Exam 15%, and ATI 5%.
Prerequisite(s): Sophomore level standing; Overall GPA of 2.7; C in all required courses for the major.
