NSG 3112 - NURSNG CARE OF CRITICLLY ILL CLIENT credits: 3.0 A clinical nursing course that uses the nursing process to study situational discontinuity in the individual client. The critically ill adult is studied as a situational discontinuity. Clinical experiences will be in a variety of critical care environments. Classroom and clinical experiences will continue to expand knowledge and skills necessary for care of individual clients as systems on the health illness continuum. Objectives: A) Apply appropriate theories and concepts from nursing and related fields as a basis for nursing practice relevant to the self and the individual client system experiencing a situational dis- continuity; B) Examine the position on the health-illness continuum of individual clients experiencing critical illness; C) Identify the impact of internal and external discontinuities which impinge upon the individual client system in meeting health care needs; D) Utilize the nursing process for the purpose of preserving, restoring, and/or maintaining of optimum health of selected client systems experiencing critical illness; E) Apply evidenced based practice relevant to the care of the individual client system, as a part of the nursing process; F) Employ the leadership process within the framework of the nurse-client relationship; G) Identify needed changes in the health care of the client through coordination with colleagues; H) Demonstrate ethical and legal accountability for the nursing care of individual clients; I) Demonstrate proficiency in skills necessary to provide care for clients in the transitional crises of critical illness; J) Participate in a leadership role functioning as a supervised team leader in the clinical setting. Method of Instruction: Lecture-discussion 1.5 hours-week. Laboratory, simulation and practice and clinical practice 4.5 hours-week. Method of Evaluation: Exam one 30%, Exam two 30%, Final Exam 35%, ICU Quizzes (In class) Assignments 5%, Medication Test P-F, Logs P-F, Clinical (skills tests, assignments, etc.) P-F, Nursing Process P-F and Service Learning P-F.
