NSC 3590 - JUNIOR SCIENCE SEMINAR credits: 1.0 A junior-level seminar course for Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Clinical Lab Science, and Environmental Science majors with a focus on career preparation, critical thinking, and analysis of scientific literature. Students perform self-assessments, write cover letters and resumes, take practice standardized exams (GRE, MCAT, etc.), develop a personal webpage, and practice interviewing. Attendance is required at the Lecture Series in the Sciences, where students critique scientific presentations by distinguished guest speakers from various scientific careers as well as connect with EC science alumni. Objectives: A) Assess personal achievements and develop plans for meeting career goals; B) Develop strong resumes, cover letters, and personal webpages; C) Investigate the admissions procedures for entrance into graduate and professional school and practice taking standardized exams; D) Critically analyze and critique primary scientific literature; E) Summarize and critique scientific presentations. Method of Instruction: Lectures, discussions, and in-class small-group activities. Method of Evaluation: Points given for: Resume and Cover Letter-10; Self Assessment-10; Critical Thinking-10; HTML Part I-5; Mock Interview-20; Practice Test-10; Speaker Summary-40; HTML Part II-15; Gen Bio I Proof Reads-20; a total of 140 points.
Prerequisite(s): Junior or Senior major in Biology, Biochemistry, Clinical Lab Science, Chemistry, or Environmental Science.
