NSC 1903 - THE SCIENCE OF FLIGHT

credits: 6.0
A study of the history and mechanisms of flight in plants, animals, and humans. Students will explore the basic physics of flight in air as well as in space. Laboratories will examine plant, insect, reptile, bird and mammal structure and function as they relate to flight. Students will observe and describe flight patterns in birds, as well as build their own flying machines. Mandatory field trips will include local aviation museums as well as nature centers. Students should come prepared to go outside. Objectives: A) Students will be able to explain the physical principles behind flight; B) Students will be able to demonstrate how flight is accomplished in biological organisms including insects, birds, mammals, and plants; C) Students will be able to demonstrate how flight is accomplished in human designed aircraft including gliders, hot air balloons, propeller and jet powered aircraft, and rockets; D) Students will be able to design experiments to explore anatomical adaptations for flight; E) Students will be able to explain how the development of flight in humans is connected to observations of flight in nature; F) Students will be able to test a hypothesis using the Scientific Method. G) Students will be able to research topics in flight and present their findings to a group in a confident manner. Method of Instruction: Laboratory, discussion, field trips to museums as well as nature centers, demonstrations, videos, behavioral observations. Method of Evaluation: Two exams (30%), weekly quizzes (20%), laboratory write-ups (30%), and presentation on field trip experiences (20%). Course Fee: $75.00 for field trips.
