MGT 3100 - LEADERSHIP IN SPORTS MANAGEMENT

MGT 3100-SPM 3100 . There are many different leadership approaches that have been considered effective. Will provide an overview of these different approaches based on a comprehensive review of the literature related to sport leadership. Students will gain a better understanding of effective leadership and explore a variety of concepts and tools that have proven effective in developing leaders in a variety of settings, with an emphasis on sports leadership. Objectives: A) Explain the unique aspects of sports management and coaching leadership; B) Define and describe leadership to include positive and negative traits; C) Understand the difference and commonalities between sports management and coaching leadership; D) Demonstrate leadership styles through role-playing; E) Identify the characteristics of destructive and toxic leadership and how to deal with them; F) Explain the importance and impact of a leader’s ability to motivate others. Method of Instruction: Lecture, classroom discussion, case analysis, and guest speakers. Method of Evaluation: Writing assignments with four reflection papers on course topics 40%; Case Studies 15%; Team Presentations 15%; Exams 30% = 100%. Meets *WRT Distribution Requirement.
