MGT 2025 - WOMEN IN MANAGEMENT credits: 3.0 This course will provide new women mangers, or women who are striving for management positions, with insight into the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for success. Many of the management skills that will be presented are the same skills required of any successful manager-male or female. It is important to recognize, however, that women must simultaneously deal with other problems, such as role conflict, dual careers, and lack of acceptance, which make the acquisition and application of these skills more difficult. This course will, therefore, highlight the many unique problems that confront female managers but not their male counterparts, the strategies for dealing with these problems, and the need to master the elements of self-improvement, mentor relationships, communication skills, conflict resolution techniques and the art of delegation. Objectives: The course is designed to present the management skills necessary for women to be successful leaders. The basic goal of the course is to “overcome” many of the negative aspects of the female socialization process in order to develop in the students a managerial frame of mind, the use of managerial skills and the confidence in their own credibility to be effective leaders. Upon completion of this course, you will: A) Be able to answer the questions, “What do managers do?” “Are women managers different from men managers? If so, how?”, B) Be able to discuss the realities of the working world with special reference to women and men, C) Be able to identify and illustrate some of the problems of women in management, and D) Have assessed your management skills, strengths, and needs. Method of Instruction: Class discussions, case studies, guest speakers, field trips, videos, and assigned readings. Method of Evaluation: Written report, oral presentation, article reviews, homework/quizzes, and case studies.
