MGT 1910 - EMPLOYMENT LAW: SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE credits: 3.0 An introductory study of the laws that establish the minimum work-related rights and obligations of employers and employees in the United States. Topics included are requirements established by the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and 1991, and the Americans with Disabilities Act regarding non-discrimination in hiring and promoting employees; sexual harassment; minimum wage laws, overtime pay requirements, and child labor restrictions established by the Fair Labor Standards Act; labor relations and union activities governed by the Wagner Act and the Taft-Hartley Act; workplace safety standards promulgated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration; rules regarding the hiring of immigrant workers and employing non-U.S. citizens outside the U.S.; and employee privacy rights as they relate to current issues such as drug testing and monitoring of employee activities on and off the employer’s premises. Ethical issues related to these laws and practices will be emphasized. Objectives: Through readings, discussion, and case analysis students will develop an understanding of federal employment laws and how they are applied in the workplace. This course will also provide the student with an understanding of the changing social, political, and economic conditions which have affected the legislative and judicial evolution of federal laws that currently govern employer-employee relations. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, presentations, guest speakers, and videotapes. Method of Evaluation: Class participation (15%), quizzes (25%), four short (four page) papers (40%); final project and presentation (20%) (topic to be selected by the student, subject to the approval of the instructor).
