MGT 1010-SPM 1010 , provides an overview of the theory and practical application of sports management concepts This course focuses on administrative, management, ethical, and legal issues. Other topics include sales and promotion of sporting events, influences on strategic management, and financial aspects of planning, organizing, and conducting sport or sport venue events. Students also will have the opportunity to explore career options in amateur and professional athletics and in the fitness and recreation industries. Objectives: A) Identify career options and opportunities in sports management, including options in amateur and professional athletics, and in fitness and recreation industries; B) Explain and articulate basic principles of sports management, including legal aspects, ethical decision-making, and the role of sports managers; C) Evaluate the relationships among sports marketing, communication, finance, and management; D) Identify the effects of sociocultural influences on sports in the United States and in the global marketplace; E) Explain an understanding of sports sales and revenue generation using effective research methods; F) Identify the use of technology in the creation and promotion of sport events. Method of Instruction: Lecture, classroom discussion, case analysis, and guest speakers. Method of Evaluation: Assignments / Quizzes, 20%, Exams 30%, Introduction to sport management case studies 20% and Term project 30%.
