MAT 3210 - ACTUARIAL MATHEMATICS I: FINANCIALMATHEMATICS credits: 3.0 Is a study of the basic financial mathematics. Students will become familiar with the mathematics pertaining to the topics of: interest, annuities, loans, bonds, rates of return, cash flows, and swaps. This course develops some of the material covered on Exam FM of the Society of Actuaries. Objectives: A) Identify the terminology of financial mathematics concerning interest, annuities, loans, bonds, rates of return, cash-flow matching, swaps, and financial securities; B) Develop equations involving any of the following, and utilize such equations to solve problems involving: interest; annuities; loans; bonds; rates of return; C) Construct a theoretical investment portfolio to immunize a set of liability cash flows, using various techniques; D) Calculate various quantities associated with an interest rate swap of various forms; E) Analyze and explain the determinants of interest rates. Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion, computer labs for analysis of both models, data, and homework. Method of Evaluation: Midterm and Final Exam 50% and Assigned Homework 50%.
