MAT 3155 - NUMERICAL METHODS credits: 3.0 Objectives: Intended to bridge the gap between idealized world of calculus text and the practical solution of problems in the sciences. Topics in elementary mathematics will be re-examined in order to develop numerical algorithms suitable for computer applications. This involves learning to make careful approximations and occasionally substituting brute force for mathematical elegance. Specific topics include: A) Systems of linear equations, B) Solutions of non-linear equations, C) Numerical differentiation and integration, and D) An introduction to numerical solutions of ordinary differential equations. Questions of style, efficiency and reliability of computer programs will also be discussed. Method of Instruction: Class time will be divided between lectures focusing on the mathematical development of algorithms and class discussions explaining in and criticizing computer programs.
Prerequisite(s): MAT 2020 - CALCULUS II
