MAT 2006 - MATH for ELEMNTRY TCHRS II: GEOMTRY AND MEASUREMENT credits: 3.0 Designed specifically as the second in a sequence for future elementary school teachers. It is intended to provide them with some of the content knowledge that they will need to teach mathematics in elementary school as well as a foundation that they can build upon as they explore other aspects of mathematics. Topics will include axiomatic systems, measurement of angles, lengths, areas and volumes, Euclidean geometry, classical constructions, and properties of polygons and polyhedral, all with an emphasis on logic, reasoning and proof. Objectives: A) To use proportions to explain multiplicative comparisons between amounts; B) Be familiar with the Geometry of Shape; C) Able to identify various two dimensional figures; D) To use a variety of manipulatives or Geometer’s Sketchpad to demonstrate geometric ideas; E) Identify and use basic axioms and definitions to construct simple proofs; F) Perform basic calculations with the Geometry of Transforming Shapes; G) Explain the ways we use measurement and in what ways things are measured; H) Identify students’ mathematical errors and discuss how to correct these errors; I) Communicate their understanding verbally, graphically and in writing. Method of Instruction: Lecture and in-class activities. Method of Evaluation: Grades will be based on homework assignments, a class presentation, quizzes, a midterm exam, and a comprehensive final exam.
