MAT 1999 - NON-EUROPEAN ROOTS OF MATHEMATICS

This course is an overview of the development of mathematics in the non-western world from the rudimentary counting of the Ishango Bone, to the early stages of algebra and geometry. Emphasis is given to the mathematics of Egypt, Mesopotamia, China. The influences that the mathematics of each of these cultures had on the others will be considered as well as their influence on western mathematics. This course will also critique the typical Eurocentric presentation of this history. Objectives: A) Use and apply ancient numeration systems such as those of Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, and the Mayan civilization; B) Use algebraic and geometric methods from these cultures and apply them, particularly to the problems that inspired their development; C) Discuss how the mathematics of these cultures influenced or failed to influence the mathematics of the others; D) Articulate how the mathematics of these cultures influenced western mathematics; E) Compare and contrast non-western methods with the standard western methods that we are familiar with. Method of Instruction: Discussion of Readings, Lecture and in-class activities. Method of Evaluation: Reading Quizzes 50 points, In Class Assignments 100 points, Weekly Quizzes 100 points , Midterm Exam 100 points, Comprehensive Final 150 points. Meets *NWP Distribution Requirements.

Prerequisite(s): ALEKS score of at least 46 or the successful completion of the Mathematical Competency Requirement and either of MAT 1030 - COLLEGE ALGEBRA  (or) MAT 1090 - PRECALCULUS .
