MAT 1971 - SCIENCE OF BASEBALL ANALYTICS

MAT 1971-NSC 1971 , will cover the function, utility, and rise of data analytics in baseball. Will focus on the fundamentals of baseball analytics and how the current industry uses them to analyze outcomes such as home runs, wins, and ERA. Begin at understanding the physics behind the movement of a baseball. Why does a curveball break and how? Then move on to how this relates to outcomes that inform data analytics. Will apply this thinking to real examples such as assessing a professional vs. our own! curveballs and player evaluations for a class-wide fantasy baseball league. Objectives: A) Apply data analytics to baseball outcomes; B) Analyze data using the R programming language; C) Compute and communicate statistical analysis of baseball data; D) Quantify basic bat ball interactions; E) Critique current baseball decisions using analytics; F) Develop strategies for evaluating players using data analytics. Method of Instruction: A combination of lectures, small and large group discussions, demonstrations, and activities will be used as the methods of instruction. Method of Evaluation: Group projects, 250 pts; exams 350 pts, participation 150 pts, individual project 250 pts for a total of 1000 and final grades will be determined based on the total number of points accumulated. Meets *MQR Distribution Requirement. Course Fee: $75.00.
