credits: 3.0
Long Term Course MAT-1045 and Spring Term Course MAT-1945. Will provide students the opportunity to explore both the creative side of mathematics and the applications of mathematics to real-world situations. The focus will be on mathematical discovery and a new side of mathematics that is different than what is usually seen in K-12 education. Mathematics will be applied to study a broad range of topics that may include repeating behavior (e.g. days of the week), visualization in 2D and 3D (e.g. lines of sight for security cameras in an art gallery), routing problems (e.g. snow plow routes), and voting. Diagrams will be used throughout the course to highlight the visual side of mathematics. Objectives: A) Apply basic mathematical skills and procedures; B) Apply mathematical results in various real-world contexts; C) Model real-world objects and-or situations using mathematical results and-or structures; D) Communicate mathematical ideas orally with peers; E) Communicate mathematical ideas clearly and thoroughly in writing to a peer audience. Method of Instruction: Mini-lectures, small group work, and class discussion. Method of Evaluation: Reading-Writing Assignments 15%; Written Homework Assignments 15%; Group project and presentation 20%; Quizzes 5%; Exams 15% each. Meets *MQR Distribution Requirement.
