LRS 1850 - TUTOR TRAINING credits: 1.0 Is required of all first-time or continuing tutors who wish to work in Tutoring Services, the Writing Center, or other tutoring capacity under the Center for Academic and Professional Excellence, introduces students to general tutoring pedagogy and best practices with the goal of training them to become effective peer tutors. Students explore a variety of topics, including current peer-learning theory, as they apply to the role of the tutor, effective tutoring practices, tutoring students outside of the tutor’s major, confidentiality, academic integrity, and professionalism. Students will have the opportunity to learn tutor concentrations in a specific subject or skill area such as writing, STEM, and other priority student support areas. Objectives: A) Demonstrate an understanding of current peer-tutoring theory; B) Demonstrate an understanding of at least one specific curriculum/skill area for tutor expertise; C) Be able to set session goals and run an individual tutorial session; D) Be able to set session goals and run a group tutorial session; E) Respond to different learning needs and assignment types in a session; F) Maintain confidentiality, academic integrity, and professionalism; G) Effectively communicate with the College community about tutoring services; H) Productively collaborate with College instructors to identify and address student academic needs. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, and workshops, as well as on-site observations of actual tutorials in the Writing Center or Tutoring Services. Method of Evaluation: Pass / Fail.
