LRS 1800 - WRITING CENTER TUTORING credits: 1.0 This course, which is required of all first-time Writing Center tutors, introduces students to writing tutoring pedagogy with the goal of training them to become effective peer tutors in the Writing Center. Students explore a variety of topics, including current composition theory and current pedagogy as they apply to Writing Center tutoring, the role of the tutor, effective tutoring practices, tutoring students outside of the tutor’s major, confidentiality, and professionalism. We will also review the writing process and various writing issues (such as thesis statements, topic sentences, introductions-conclusions, grammar) as needed. Objectives: A) Demonstrate an understanding of current composition theory as it applies to Writing Center tutoring; B) Demonstrate an understanding of current composition pedagogy as it applies to Writing Center tutoring; C) Be able to set an agenda and run a writing tutorial session; D) Be able to respond to all types of student writing; E) Maintain confidentiality and professionalism; F) Promote the services of the Writing Center across campus. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, and workshops, as well as on-site observations of actual writing tutorials in the Writing Center. Method of Evaluation: Pass-Fail.
