LRS 1300 - SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION LEADERTRAINING

This course, which is a requirement for all incoming Supplemental Instruction Leaders, will prepare students to serve as SI Leaders and support them through their first term of work. They will engage in both pre-service trainings (“boot camp”) and ongoing in-service trainings (weekly). Students will learn the what, how, and why of Supplemental Instruction through a variety of interactive assignments. They will observe, reflect on, participate in, and lead SI sessions. Objectives: A) Explain the difference between Supplemental Instruction and tutoring services; B) Explain the benefits of Supplemental Instruction for the students, leaders, faculty, and institution as a whole; C) Collaborate productively with faculty and supervisor(s) to plan sessions that meet student needs; D) Develop thorough session plans that successfully integrate collaborative learning techniques, facilitation strategies, and learning strategies; E) Employ in sessions effective strategies recommended by the SI model; F) Maintain confidentiality, academic integrity, and professionalism. Method of Instruction: Lectures, Discussions, Workshops, Simulations, Observations, and Assigned Readings. Method of Evaluation: Will be graded on a Pass-Fail basis. Observation Reflections (25%), Participation (25%), and Session Plans (50%).
