Elmira College recognizes that a college education takes place both inside and outside of the classroom. This course introduces students to the college and promotes and supports academic, intellectual, personal, and social growth and success. The course reviews the skills and competencies necessary for students’ transition to the college, including developing effective study skills; understanding Elmira College Core Curriculum; managing time, finances, responsibilities, health, and wellness; developing social relationships and appreciating the diversity of our campus and communities; and preparing for global citizenship. This is a personal development course focusing on academic success and the development of related living skills which go beyond the academic environment. Objectives: A) Identify, and describe how and when to use on-campus support services; B) Identify, and demonstrate effective success strategies required throughout their collegiate experience; C) Identify the value and application of a Liberal Arts education; D) Practice respectful interactions regarding cultural, religious, racial, gender, and sexual orientation differences; E) Describe how a person’s culture/beliefs influence his/her view of the world; F) Identify areas of personal development and opportunities to innovate, grow and improve; G) Apply the decision-making process to social and academic scenarios; H) Use campus resources to create and manage their successful path towards graduation; I) Work collaboratively and build supportive relationships with fellow students, staff, and faculty, both in and out of the classroom; J) Identify, describe, and practice positive social and academic behavior; K) Establish goals for academic success and create a plan to reach goals; L) Practice professionalism in all interactions. Method of Instruction: Some instructional strategies include lecture, small group interaction, large group discussion, out of class readings, community interaction, and more. Method of Evaluation: Reflection Papers 25%, Reading Quizzes and three exams 20%, Application Assignments 25%, Final Exam (presentations) 20%, Active Participation, attendance, enthusiastic participation in all activities, meaningful contribution to discussions and activities, submitting all homework 10%.
