LAW 2020 - EVIDENCE


credits: 3.0
A critical examination of the law and practice relating to evidence in civil and criminal proceedings in the United States. Will seek to develop students’ knowledge of evidence law and the ability to understand how it operates in practice. Objectives: A) Explain the law of evidence applied throughout the United States generally; B) Explain the relevant case law and statutory provisions of impacting American evidence law; C) Explain and demonstrate a sound knowledge of the rules of procedure surrounding the application of the law of evidence in the United States; D) Apply the relevant rules and principles in hypothetical situations; E) Explain the underlying rationale for the main evidentiary rules and principles; F) Critically evaluate the policy and operation of the law of evidence in the United States. Method of Instruction: Will be taught combining traditional lectures with a semi-Case Study Method/Socratic Method format. Method of Evaluation: Class Participation: 10%, Case Briefs: 10%, Discussion Paper (within the first third of class): 10%, Midterm Examination: 35%, and Final Examination: 35%.
