LAW 1010 - SURVEY OF AMERICAN LAW credits: 3.0 Will provide a general overview of the core areas of American law that students will be exposed to in their first and second years of law school, including: including: Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Torts, Property Law, Contracts and Business Law, Family Law, Civil Procedure, Evidence, Criminal Procedure, and Administrative Law and Procedure. Additionally, this course will introduce students to legal research, legal reasoning, legal writing, law school success strategies, and professionalism in the legal environment. Objectives: A) Discuss the development and structures of American law, include the role of each branch of government in shaping the law; B) Apply the fundamental principles of Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Torts, Property Law, Contracts and Business Law, Family Law, Civil Procedure, Evidence, Criminal Procedure, and Administrative Law and Procedure in the United States to hypothetical scenarios; C) Engage in legal reasoning to synthesize statutory law and case law in relation to criminal law and criminal procedure; D) Become familiar with the rigors of the first year experience in a law school environment, including the Socratic Method, as included in each students participation grade. Method of Instruction: Will be taught combining traditional lectures with a semi-Case Study Method-Socratic Method format. Method of Evaluation: Class Participation: 10%, Discussion Paper (within the first third of class): 20%, Midterm Examination: 35%, and Final Examination: 35%.
