ITM 3400 - MANAGING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES FOR BUSINESS credits: 3.0 Information technology is pervasive throughout business organizations and understanding how to manage technical resources is critical to conducting business in a global economy. Will focus on the challenges of managing technical resources and projects within a business. Understand business processes, culture, IT terminology, business information, and how technology fits into an organization. Will introduce concepts and strategies to manage business processes, change, and IT resources within technical and financial frameworks. Objectives: A) Explain business processes, culture, IT terminology, and how technology fits into an organization; B) Apply critical thinking skills to analyze business processes, needs, and financial considerations when developing technical solutions, such as total cost of ownership and return on investment; C) Develop written communication skills by writing about and reflecting key concepts covered in course readings; D) Develop project specifications for a technical solution to improve business processes. Includes research, design, functional specifications, and implementation; E) Understand technical vocabulary and IT roles in an organization to manage change, communicate recommendations, and implement improved procedures with business and technical teams; F) Research and communicate plans for managing IT services and systems to align IT services with the needs of business through writing and oral presentations. Method of Instruction: Readings materials and case studies; Discuss Written Assignments in class; In-class discussions and problem solving exercises; Team Presentations; and Final course project. Method of Evaluation: Writing assignments with six reflection papers on course topics, 60 %; In-class problem solving exercises, 10%; Team presentation, 10%; Final course project to develop a business case and IT implementation plan, 20%.
