ITM 3300 - ISSUES AND IMPLICATIONS OF INFO TECHNOLOGY IN BUSINESS

Information technology influences every aspect of business and society. Understanding the diverse issues that impact the use of technology in business is critical to conducting business in a global economy. This course will investigate the ethical, legal, and social issues associated with information systems to prepare for careers in information technology management. Topics covered include intellectual property protection, privacy, security, system reliability, and technology mediated work environments. Objectives: A) Evaluate and explain the ethical, legal, data, and social issues within technology management decision making; B) Analyze legal and privacy issues to include: computer crime, identify theft, intellectual property, data collection and privacy, and access to Information Technology; C) Identify the principles of developing information technology systems within an ethical, private and legal framework; D) Explain the range of issues for selecting and implementing software and systems (e.g. open source, proprietary, copyright, licensing, piracy) within a business setting; E) Apply the principles of risk analysis in developing technology vendor-client relationships, in areas of contracts, confidentiality, and non-disclosure agreements; F) Describe the impact of using large scale data on IT decision-making, and development of AI systems; G) Examine ethics and social responsibilities in relation to information technology in business; H) Research the legal, regulatory, and privacy considerations, and write a technology strategy implementation plan for a business organization; I) Develop written communication skills by writing about and reflecting key concepts covered in course readings. Method of Instruction: Seminar format with extensive class discussion, Individual presentations, Lectures, and Assigned readings. Method of Evaluation: Writing assignments with six reflection papers on course topics. There will be a substantial writing component on current issues and advances in information technology (60 %); In-class discussions and case studies (10%); Team presentation (10%); and Final course project (20%). Meets *WRT Distribution Requirement.
