ITM 3200 - DATABASE SYSTEMS FOR MANAGERS credits: 3.0 Designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to managing data using database management systems (DBMS). It covers the applications of database technology in business and focuses on the key concepts related to database development: 1) database management systems, 2) data analysis and design using entity-relationship diagram (ERD), 3) database implementation and use based on Structured Query Language (SQL), and 4) data warehousing. Students will also gain hands-on experience using leading database products to define, load, and process relational database. Objectives: A) Acquire core vocabulary, knowledge, and techniques relevant to DBMS; B) Use a leading DBMS software to: Identify the basic concepts of data storage, retrieval, and transformation, Develop conceptual and logical database models based on business requirements, Create, modify, drop tables and columns within databases, Insert, update, delete data in tables within databases, Retrieve data from a database table, Specify database search conditions and display results, including searching joined tables, and Explain managerial issues related to the use of database systems. Method of Instruction: Readings from textbook and supplemental materials as assigned; Assignments as outlined in the syllabus; In-class discussion and activities; and Final course project: database, paper, and presentation. Method of Evaluation: Final Project: Oral Presentation (15%) of final grade; Final Project: Functional Database (15%) of final grade; Final Project: Paper (15%) of final grade; Homework and database assignments (15%) of final grade. The ten homework and database assignments will form the base for the final project. Failure to complete the assignments and take constructive feedback will, likely, impact performance on the final project; In-class discussion (10%) of final grade; Exams will be (30%) of the final grade. There will be a total of three exams given throughout the semester. These will not be cumulative but rather progress exams after specific material has been covered
