HUM 1300 - MEDICAL HUMANITIES credits: 3.0 Will study what living is, beyond the scope of science, medicine, nursing and allied health care practice. Students will gain broad comprehension of what living is through literature, media, social sciences and art with the goal of developing liberal manners of observation and analysis beyond empiricism. Will explore a wide continuum of work (by scholars, writers, practitioners, patients, and caregivers) that represents diverse perspectives on wellness and illness. When read carefully these works clarify and complicate what it means to be human, in particular relation to suffering, personhood, our responsibility to each other, empathy, compassion, self-reflection, and advocacy. Objectives: A) Students will develop critical reading skills, engaging multiple genres of writing and media, including nonfiction, fiction, poetry, TED talks, and film; B) Will develop critical thinking skills, analyzing texts beyond their literalness; C) Develop critical writing skills, incorporating peer-reviewed research, analysis and synthesis in written explorations of a required text. Method of Instruction: Lectures, discussions, film and media, break out groups, and presentations. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes, writing assignments, and final presentation. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
