HMS 4000 - PROGRAM PLANNING AND EVALUATION credits: 3.0 Will examine both theory and applied techniques for planning and evaluating human service programs. Topics covered include: planning theory, planning in human service agencies, components of plans, needs assessment, funding, grant writing, and evaluation research design. Each student will prepare a proposal for a program of their own design. In addition to human service majors, students with an interest in management of not-for-profit organizations may benefit from this course. Objectives: A) To become acquainted with planning theory and its application to human service planning; B) To become acquainted with evaluation research and its application to evaluating human service programs; C) To develop skills in needs assessment, writing goals and objectives, selecting strategies for human service interventions, finding and budgeting funds, evaluating human service programs and writing and evaluating proposals; D) To prepare a proposal for a human service program designed by the student. Method of Instruction: Lectures and discussions, group and individual assignments, completion of a grant proposal. Method of Evaluation: Proposal drafts and final proposal, and homework assignments, proposal presentation, and participation. Meets *WRT Distribution Requirement.
Prerequisite(s): SENIOR STANDING OR INSTRUCTOR’S SIGNATURE REQUIRED.
