HMS 3120 - COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: SOC 3120 HMS 3120-SOC 3120 , will examine the role of community organizations and local government in defining social problems and initiating social change. Methods of community organization including social movements, protests, consciousness raising, legal advocacy, lobbying, self-help, action research, and whistle blowing will be discussed. Organizing at both the local and the national level will be considered. Objectives: A) Consider the concept of power and its role in defining social problems and social policy; B) Introduce both the theory and practice of community organization; C) Examine selective methods of social change ranging from legal advocacy to civil disobedience; D) Understand the role of community organizations and local, state, and federal government in the design, funding, and delivery of human services. Method of Instruction: Lectures, discussions, guest speakers, and individual group assignments. Method of Evaluation: An examination, papers, and class participation. Meets *LAS Distribution Requirement.
