HMS 3000 - SOCIAL POLICY credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: SOC 3000 HMS 3000-SOC 3000 , Will examine the formation and implementation of social policy. Policy-making will be considered as both a rational and a political process. The roles of government employees, elected officials, the media, professionals, and the public will be considered. Selected U.S. policies will be compared with those of other nations. Objectives: A) To study the policy-making process, considering both its rational and its political nature; B) To examine the political environment and historical context of the policy-making process; C) To investigate the roles of federal, state, and local government, the media, professionals and professional organizations, and public participation in the formation and implementation of policy; D) To survey current social welfare policy in the U.S.; E) To increase awareness of the ways in which political and economic inequalities affect social policy; F) To compare selected U.S. policies with those of other nations. Method of Instruction: Lectures, discussions, guest speakers, individual and group assignments. Method of Evaluation: Papers, presentations, out-of-class exercises, in-class exercises, and participation. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
