HMS 1960 - HUMAN SEXUALITY

HMS 1960-SSC 1960 -WMS 1960 . This course provides students with an understanding of the biological, cultural, psychological and social features of human sexuality. Topics will include an overview of the biology of sex and reproduction; the development of sexuality throughout the lifespan; sexuality research and measurement; sex therapy, sexual dysfunction and treatment; sexual orientation; transgender and sex change; sex and gender roles, including multiple gender roles; fertility control, including contraception and abortion; pregnancy and birth. Objectives: A) To describe the basic biological and anatomical bases of the male and female reproductive system; B) To outline the physiology of sexual response and reproduction, including malfunction; C) To describe the biological, psychological and social changes that occur in an individual’s sexuality over the life course; D) To outline the range of ways that sexuality and gender are defined, interpreted, managed and controlled in different cultures and societies; E) To describe the range and bases of different values people have regarding sexuality and sexual issues. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, readings as directed, guest lectures and presentations, films and videos. Method of Evaluation: Course participation, including attendance and active participation in five informal assignments (45%), research paper (25%), and three exams (30%).
