HMS 1905 - ABUSE IN AMERICA credits: 3.0 This course provides an overview of the multifaceted topic of physical and psychological abuse in America. The causes, effects and recognition of abuse across the life span will be explored. Issues of prevention and intervention will be discussed. Objectives: At the end of this course, the student will have an increased awareness of: A) selected types of physical and psychological abuse, B) populations throughout the life span at risk for abuse, C) factors which influence abuse, D) strategies to detect and prevent abuse, E) programs developed for crisis intervention related to abuse, F) legislative and legal issues related to the reporting and management of abuse, G) the relationship between abuse and social institutions. Method of Instruction: Lecture-discussion, audiovisuals, and field trip. Method of Evaluation: Class participation, researched presentations on abuse issue.
