HLS 2030 - HEALTH CARE ETHICS


credits: 3.0
Requirement in NSG major and will prepare health science students to identify and address multiple ethical issues arising within professional practice and the dynamic health care delivery system. With the use of ethical theories and principles the student will apply ethical decision-making models to address dilemmas within practice, health care systems, and global communities. Is designed to provide strategies for promoting ethical practice and developing ethical leadership within the technological health care environment. Objectives: A) Health Care Ethics provides students with a deeper appreciation of ethical codes and perspectives of various health care professionals; B) Will enable students to develop skills in recognizing and analyzing ethical quandaries that arise in professional practice, team relationships, health care organizations, and communities; C) Requires students to apply a systematic approach to justifying a particular ethical stance using ethical theories and principles; This course provides students with an awareness of the complex ethical issues involving research, vulnerable populations, and global health concerns. Method of Instruction: Readings, discussion, case analysis, and short papers. Method of Evaluation: Attendance and active participation are expected of all students. The performance of students will be evaluated with the following breakdown: Discussions 25%, case analysis 25%, and short papers 50%. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
