HIS 2965H - THE CHINESE REVOLUTION

Will explore the role of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping in the rise of China as a global power. Through an understanding of their policies and the historical contexts that they lived in, will see their influence on the recently enshrined “Xi Jinping Thought.” By the end of the course, students will have a clear understanding of modern Chinese history and a range of insights into why the current Chinese state acts the way it does. Major themes that will be explored include: the shifting meaning of “order” and “the people” in modern Chinese discourse, the relationship between domestic and international policies in modern Chinese history. Objectives: A) Identify the key people and summarize the key movements and events in modern Chinese history from 1793 to the present; B) Outline the impact of international imperialism and the concepts behind it on modern Chinese history; C) Analyze and evaluate a variety of historical data; D) Communicate effectively, in writing and speaking, about historical developments in China. Method of Instruction: Designed to be seminar style with the bulk of the class time spent discussing the materials punctuated with occasional lectures. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes: 30%, Research briefs: 40%, Timeline project (using Timeline JS): 30%. Meets *NWP Distribution Requirement.
