HIS 2930H - WORLD HISTORY ONE INGREDIENTAT A TIME credits: 3.0 This course serve as an Honors elective in the Honors Program as well as an elective for the History and Classical Studies Majors. This course explores the interconnected nature of human history through food. Will explore topics like what our ancestors in Africa ate and its influence on humans to this day; how did it come to pass that salt and pepper, products that had once been some of the most expensive materials, are now available in quantity to the vast majority of humanity. Will start with the earliest history of humans in Africa, travel through the Foraging Era, the Agrarian Era, and finally the Modern Era following the movement of food, technology, and people around the world. A dissect a range of recipes and food stuffs will look at the evolution of global exchanges. Each student will have the opportunity to research a favorite recipe tracing both the origins of the recipe as a whole and the history of each ingredient learning the complex and interconnected history of humanity one ingredient at a time. Objectives: A) Identify the major factors in the global movement of practices, ideas, and people through time as demonstrated by means of quizzes; B) Describe major trends in world history and the impact they have had on our daily lives through timeline projects; C) Interpret and analyze primary sources through timeline projects; D) Communicate effectively, in writing and speaking, about historical developments in world history though research briefs and timeline projects. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, and workshopping. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes: 30%; Research briefs: 40%; Timeline project (using Timeline JS): 30%. Meets *GLP Distribution Requirement.
