HIS 3525 - EUROPEAN TOTALITARIANISM

Early twentieth-century Europe saw the advent of totalitarian philosophies and regimes that sought not merely to seize political power, but also to transform all elements of national life. We will examine the theory and practice of Communism, Fascism, and Nazism. Will read works written by the founders of these movements, study the policies implemented by the totalitarian regimes in Russia and Germany, and analyze their impact on European history. Objectives: A) To gain an understanding of the effects of totalitarian thought and politics on 20th-century European history and B) To improve research, oral presentation, and writing skills. Method of Instruction: Class discussion, with lectures, and films. Method of Evaluation: Class participation (20%), short oral presentation (10%), twelve to fifteen page research paper (50%), and essay exam (20%). Meets *WRT and *WEP Distribution Requirements.
