HIS 3515 - TUDOR ENGLAND credits: 3.0 The years from 1485 to 1603, when monarchs of the Tudor dynasty ruled England, were one of the most dynamic and creative periods in English and indeed in world history. In the late 1400’s, England was a minor country on the fringes of Europe, recovering from the self-inflicted wounds of bloody civil wars. Yet by 1600, the English had defeated the Spanish Armada and had begun their attempts to colonize the New World, and London was a thriving cultural center. We will examine the social, political, and cultural developments that created the Modern English nation and led to the flowering of the English Renaissance. Objectives: A) To gain an understanding of the major social, political, and cultural developments in Tudor England; B) To improve research, oral presentation, and writing skills as appropriate to the discipline. Method of Instruction: Class discussion, with occasional lectures and movies. Method of Evaluation: Class participation, a short oral presentation on a topic related to the readings, a research paper or two essays on assigned reading, and an essay exam. Meets *WRT and *WEP Distribution Requirements.
Prerequisite(s): WRT 1050 - COLLEGE WRITING:
