HIS 3465 - RECONSTRUCTION AND THE RISE OF JIM CROW credits: 3.0 In the three decades after the Civil War, the United States had a unique opportunity to address the long-standing issues relating to the enslavement and disenfranchisement of its black citizens. After a period of modest success during Reconstruction, this opportunity was lost to the triumph of vigilante suppression of civil rights, legalized segregation, and the entrenchment of a new form of racial hierarchy that would endure for another one hundred years. Will examine how and why happened and the consequences. Objectives: A) Identify, describe, and explain key people and events relating to Reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow during the period 1865-1900; B) Identify, describe, and explain the economic, social, political, and cultural factors influencing the events of this period; C) Compare and contrast primary sources relating to the events of this period; D) Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, about the history of this period. Method of Instruction: Class discussion of assigned material supplemented by occasional lectures. Method of Evaluation: In-class exams, presentations, research paper, and two essays. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
