HIS 2740 - PLAGUES AND PEOPLES:DISEASE IN WORLD HISTORY

This course examines the impact of epidemic disease on human societies across the globe, from Ancient Rome to the present. Will consider the social, political, and cultural impacts of epidemics; how individuals, communities, and societies responded to the experience of epidemics; the relationship between disease, colonialism, imperialism, and migration; developments in science, medicine, and public health. Epidemics to be studied may include: plague, smallpox, cholera, influenza, polio, AIDS, and Covid19. Objectives: A) Identify, describe, and explain the social, political, and cultural impacts of epidemic disease; B) Identify, describe, and explain the ways in which individuals, communities, and societies responded to the experience of epidemics; C) Identify, describe, and explain the relationship between disease, colonialism, imperialism, and migration; D) Analyze, compare, and contrast primary sources relating to the history of epidemic disease. Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion. Method of Evaluation: In class exams, presentations, and papers. Meets *GLP Distribution Requirement.
