HIS 2504 - HISTORY OF ENGLAND SINCE 1688

By the early nineteenth century, Britain had become the most powerful nation in the world. It maintained this position for around a hundred years, only to see its political and economic might decline steadily in the course of the twentieth century. This course covers English history from the “Glorious” Revolution of 1688 to the present. All aspects of English life will receive our attention, from politics and the economy to social changes and cultural achievements. Major topics include: the “Glorious” Revolution; the growth of Britain’s commercial empire; the Industrial Revolution and its consequences; political reform in the nineteenth century; Victorian society and culture; the rivalries and conflicts that involved Britain in the two World Wars; and contemporary Britain. Objectives: A) Familiarize students with the basic developments in British history during the past three hundred years; B) Recognize the special features of British history in the broader context of European and worldwide historical movements; C) Improve writing and research skills. Method of Instruction: Mainly class discussion, with occasional lectures and videos. Method of Evaluation: Class participation, two exams, and a six-to-eight page research paper. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirements.
