HIS 2503 - HISTORY OF ENGLAND TO 1688


credits: 3.0
This course covers English history from the earliest times to the “Glorious” Revolution of 1688, by which time England was colonizing the New World and becoming a major world power. All aspects of English life will receive our attention, from the economy and politics to the culture, and from the kings and queens to ordinary people. Major topics include: Pre-Roman Britain; the Anglo-Saxon period; the Norman Conquest; Society, Politics, and the Church in Medieval England; the English Reformation; the English Renaissance; and the English Revolution. Objectives: A) To familiarize students with the basic developments in English history during this period; B) To recognize the special features of English history in the context of broader historical developments; C) To improve writing and research skills. Method of Instruction: Class discussions, including lectures and videos. Method of Evaluation: Class attendance and participation, quizzes, two exams (a midterm and a final), 6-8 page research paper. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirements.
