credits: 3.0 An interest in determining the extent to which ancient Roman culture provides the basis for certain intellectual and institutional developments in the modern world. This interest should, of course, be secondary to one’s desire to learn more about ancient Rome for its own sake. The course has particular value for students of literature and art as well as for majors in the social sciences. Objectives: A) Gain a comprehensive understanding of life and thought among the ancient Romans; B) Determine the extent of Roman cultural dependency, Rome’s special achievements and her contribution to the arts and sciences of later ages. Method of Instruction: A) Informal presentations by the instructor. Films and slides are frequently used; B) Discussion of topics previously introduced; C) Guided research in an area selected by the student. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
